BMI for Women β€” The Basics

The WHO BMI formula is the same for men and women: weight (kg) Γ· heightΒ² (mΒ²). The healthy range of 18.5–24.9 also applies to both sexes. However, women and men have different body compositions at the same BMI:

  • Women naturally carry 6–11% more body fat than men at equivalent BMI values due to hormonal differences (oestrogen promotes fat storage)
  • Women have less muscle mass on average, meaning a given BMI represents more fat and less muscle compared to men
  • Women's fat distribution changes significantly with age β€” particularly after menopause, when fat shifts from hips and thighs to the abdomen

Despite these differences, the same BMI thresholds apply to women and men. The distinction matters more when interpreting results and deciding whether to take action.

Healthy BMI for Women by Age

Although the standard BMI thresholds don't change with age, research suggests that the health risks associated with different BMI values vary across life stages for women:

Age GroupSuggested BMI RangeNotes
18–24 years18.5 – 24.9Standard WHO range applies
25–34 years18.5 – 24.9Standard range; pregnancy possible
35–44 years19.0 – 25.9Slightly higher upper limit acceptable
45–54 years20.0 – 26.9Perimenopause β€” fat redistribution begins
55–65 years21.0 – 27.9Post-menopause; preserving muscle mass important
65+ years22.0 – 28.0Higher BMI associated with lower mortality risk

These age-adjusted ranges are based on research but are not official WHO guidelines. Always discuss your individual BMI with a healthcare professional.

Body Fat % vs BMI for Women

Body fat percentage is a more precise indicator of health than BMI for women. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) defines these healthy ranges for women:

CategoryBody Fat % (Women)Equivalent BMI (approx.)
Essential fat10–13%Below 18.5
Athletic14–20%18–22
Fitness21–24%21–24
Acceptable25–31%22–27
Obese32% and above28+

Waist Circumference for Women

For women, waist circumference is a crucial companion metric to BMI. Abdominal fat increases risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and metabolic syndrome independently of overall BMI. The NHS and WHO recommend:

  • Low risk: Below 80 cm (31.5 inches)
  • Increased risk: 80–88 cm (31.5–34.6 inches)
  • High risk: Above 88 cm (34.6 inches)

Measure at the narrowest point of your waist, usually just above the belly button, after a normal exhale.

BMI During Pregnancy

BMI calculated during pregnancy is not meaningful as a health indicator because weight naturally increases significantly. Instead, pre-pregnancy BMI is used to guide healthy weight gain recommendations during pregnancy:

Pre-pregnancy BMIRecommended Weight Gain
Below 18.5 (underweight)12.5 – 18 kg (28–40 lbs)
18.5 – 24.9 (normal)11.5 – 16 kg (25–35 lbs)
25.0 – 29.9 (overweight)7 – 11.5 kg (15–25 lbs)
30.0 and above (obese)5 – 9 kg (11–20 lbs)

Frequently Asked Questions

The ideal BMI for adult women is generally considered to be between 20 and 22 kg/mΒ² β€” the midpoint of the WHO healthy range of 18.5–24.9. However, individual variation is significant, and a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is medically considered healthy.
A BMI of 27 falls in the overweight range (25–29.9) by WHO standards. However, whether this represents a health concern depends on other factors including age, body fat distribution, muscle mass, waist circumference, and metabolic health markers. Many women at BMI 27 are in good health.
BMI becomes less accurate as an indicator for women over 50. Menopause causes a shift in fat distribution from the lower body to the abdomen, which increases health risks even without a change in BMI. Waist circumference and body fat percentage are more informative for this age group.
